What is individualized care anyway?

Ever been herded through a medical experience like cattle at a sale barn? You know what it feels like. Your individuality and dignity left at the door. The aroma of disinfectant choking your lungs and the tissue paper covering the exam table making you feel more like a fast-food burger than a human?  Well, we’ve felt that way, too, and that’s why Integrative Family Medicine strives to deliver individualized care to each and every patient. We call it, “The experience we all want, but rarely get.”

From the moment you walk through the door and into our lobby, you’ll notice the difference. Tranquility. With our online patient portal system, patients are able to communicate directly with their providers. Which means our front office staff will be able to warmly greet you, instead of being tied to the phones. We schedule appointments to maximize the amount of time you spend with your provider,  instead of in the waiting room.

You’ll be brought back to the exam room by your provider, meaning you share your health history and current health concerns only once. Your provider will obtain vital signs and complete a thorough review of symptoms. Our new patient appointments are scheduled for 40 minutes, during that time, we want to learn about YOU! How you feel, what your health goals are, what your personal life looks like? All of that information helps us know how to take the very best care of you now. It also helps us to build a relationship with you for when you need care for an illness or symptom. We are big into building relationships with our patients.

Ever left an appointment feeling talked into a plan you’re not okay with? At Integrative Family Medicine, we practice informed consent. We lay out risks, benefits, and alternatives to treatment. We are up to date on medical standards and practices. We know what situations require pharmaceuticals, which we can wait and watch, and what things to refer to a specialist. At the end of the day, we let you make an informed decision, one you as the patient or parent consent to.

Being listened to in our exam rooms isn’t the only difference you’ll notice, we cover our exam tables with muslin blankets. If your exam requires the removal of clothing, you’ll be provided a terry cloth robe. This distinction in our model of care delivery seems small, but it makes a huge difference. You’re not a number here, you’re an individual. We want to honor that.

The patient portal, mentioned above, is the best way for our patients to communicate with their provider, when not face to face. For a non-emergent health concern or question, just log on to your portal and send a message to your provider. That message is secure and can only be accessed by your provider; we don’t have nursing staff triage messages like most clinics. The patient portal is also where you’ll go to view your lab results

Because we offer care to the entire family, from babies, to parents, to grandparents; the experience of individualized care isn’t something that anyone has to miss out on. So say goodbye to being herded through healthcare like a farm animal, treated like a number, and sitting on a cold exam table. Call or click today to schedule a new patient appointment. We'd love to build a relationship with you, founded on individualized care.

Sara Lynn, RN, BSN
“If you don’t invest in your health, no one else will.”
